Special Needs Dentistry

Everyone has particular needs when they are at the dentist.  People with dental phobia, complex medical, cognitive and intellectual disabilities often require special methods or techniques to prevent or treat oral health problems, or where their conditions necessitate special dental treatment plans. Caring for a special needs patient takes compassion and understanding.

Woden Dental Care is one of only a few clinics in Canberra and nearby NSW regions to promote the inclusion of those with special needs within the general dental community.

Our practitioners will consider the patient’s individual situation such as oral hygiene, abilities, medical issues and, in some cases, social issues.  Planning and providing care often involves teamwork between the dental professionals, the patient and their family members/carers, or their treating doctors.

Woden Dental Care provides:

  • Treatment under Nitrous oxide sedation (happy gas)

  • Treatment under Intravenous (IV) conscious sedation

  • Treatment under General anaesthesia

These services allow access to general dentistry by patients with anxiety, dental fear or dental phobia, patients with medical complications, or patients who can not cope with treatment done under normal treatment conditions.

Treatment under Intravenous (IV) conscious sedation and Nitrous oxide sedation (happy gas) are available at our surgery. Treatment under General Anaesthesia is performed at John James Private Hospital for complex surgical procedures, such as multiple and wisdom teeth extraction.
